Our God is Generous

"You know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich."- 2 Corinthians 8:9 (ESV)

Our God shows his generosity to us in so many ways. He provides for all our needs according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus (Phil. 4:19), so that whether we have a lot or a little, we can always rejoice in his goodness to us.

God's greatest generosity to us was in giving his own Son Jesus on our behalf (Rom. 8:31-32). Jesus willingly suffered the punishment we deserve for our sin because he loves us so deeply (John 3:16).

We give because we know that God owns our possessions, we are only stewards of them (Matt. 25:14-30). We want to use our money in a way that pleases God and builds up other people in Christ. But we also give so that we can joyfully participate in our God's provision for the needs of his people. Our God owns the cattle on a thousand hills! (Ps. 50:10) When we give generously to support the work of the church or to relieve the needs of the saints, we get a taste of God's abundant generous joy.

"Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work." - 2 Corinthians 9:6-8
